Ever been on a job interview that you thought went fantastic only to never hear back? While it may seem like you were dumped after a first date, you can definitely get past it. Here are a few reasons that you may not have ended up getting that job offer, that have nothing to do with your ability as a candidate.
The Fit Wasn’t Right
Maybe the interviewer liked you, but felt like your personality and experience may not have been what they were looking for. With the team dynamic, hiring managers need to make sure they choose someone who will complement or fill a need the team doesn’t already have. Think about it this way, they are likely saving you from an environment that wouldn’t be right for you. This one wasn’t right for you, but the perfect fit is out there for you. The Job Was Pulled
Sometimes a company will have to pull a job after the interview process has already started. It could be due to a number of reasons and none of them have anything to do with you. Companies are constantly reviewing budgets and if it affects the job you are interviewing for, it could be cancelled. This tends to be more common during the end of the year as budgets are really being reviewed. The trouble is, you will likely never know if this happens as it isn’t something the company will likely want to advertise.
There Was Another Candidate
It could be that one of the other interviewees had a leg up on you in terms of experience or connections. You can’t get down on yourself about that! You likely made a great impression on the interviewer who will think of you when they have another opening. One of the best ways to find your next role is by growing and cultivating your connections. So, if you felt like you had a good connection with the hiring manager, make it a point to stay connected. Even if their job is filled, they likely know other hiring managers in the industry that they can refer you to.
Whatever the reason you didn’t get the offer, don’t let it get you discouraged. The right job for you is out there and you need to keep looking. Continue applying to anything you are interested and qualified for and make sure you keep up with your contacts. Let anyone and everyone know you are looking and what you are looking for.
